It’s finally summer and that means braais, icy drinks and pool parties!
You’ve created the Whatsapp group, set a date after checking your weather app and now you’re ready to go into full planning mode! Unsure of how to go about hosting the pool party of the season? We’re here to hold your hand and make sure it’s the most Instagrammed event in your ’hood!
1. Make sure you have enough shade
There are many people that don’t like being outdoors in the hot sun, so be sure to have an area close by that’s covered – a big umbrella does the trick, or even a gazebo. An added touch would be to offer some high-quality sunblock and some extra sun hats.
2. Set up your drinks station outdoors in the shade, where guests can easily access it
Make sure you have a big cooler box or champagne bucket filled with loads of ice and ensure your drinks are chilled before guests arrive. For beers, try to offer cans rather than bottles and put out plastic glasses and champagne flutes (see the next point).
3. Don’t allow any glass near the pool
This is a safety precaution. You don’t want any broken glass falling into the pool or landing on the pavement where guests are walking (or dancing!).
4. Have an outdoor grill/braai for interactive cooking
Swimming and playing games in the pool can build an appetite, so have a station where you can cook something over the coals. Get some guests involved to help out. If you’re not into braaing, a few platters of easy-to-eat finger food are just as welcome.
Try these recipes:
Lamb kofta on rosemary skewers
BBQ cauliflower nuggets with a sour cream and chive dip
Halloumi, za’atar and honey parcels
5. Have some inflatables handy
Fun lilos and floating drinks holders are a great idea when hosting a pool party. They add the X factor that creates a real ‘summer pool party’ atmosphere.
Bonus tip: Don’t forget to create an epic playlist!
