The festive season is here, it’s time to stay out late, to experience new things and to truly indulge in everything that your city (or your city for the summer) has to offer. For those making their way to Durban this summer, we have a selection of two delicious restaurants that you have to experience:
Umdloti Beach is one of KZN’s most popular spots due to safe conditions and warm water. It also happens to be the location of SandBar, an unpretentious restaurant where sand, sun and surfing meet.
SandBar is the brainchild of four Umdloti locals who had a dream of bringing people together over cocktails and great food. Bedecked with surfing paraphernalia along the walls, the SandBar is the perfect spot to chill over drinks and tunes while taking in the picturesque backdrop of the Umdloti Beach.
The food here is simple and reliable, consisting of tapas-style starters, a range of juicy mains and delicious desserts. The sushi served at SandBar is certainly a highlight and definitely something that visitors to the venue should try.
The Sandbar also specialises in amazing sticky pork ribs sourced from a local farm known as Loving Hams. Juicy, succulent and tantalising, we totally recommend it! Aside from being a fantastic restaurant, SandBar is also a 20-seater cocktail bar and lounge with a comprehensive wine list showcasing the best of South Africa’s produce. Ranging from easy drinking wines to impressive award-winning vintages, SandBar certainly has a wine for every palate.

A myriad of beers and cocktails round off the menu to perfection, while visitors are encouraged to enjoy the laid-back vibe while sipping on their favourite beverages. If you’re looking for relaxation with a touch of sophistication, SandBar is the venue for you.
Tucked away along Durban’s South Beach is a little piece of food heaven. From indulgent footlongs to the most delicious curries, Billal’s offers a feast for any curry lover’s tastebuds.
The star of the show, however, is Billal’s Mutton Bunny Chow. Made up of a hollow-out loaf of bread, this meal is packed with flavour and will have you salivating at just the thought of it. The mutton is tender and delicious, while the gravy packs a seriously spicy punch. The bunny chow is served with two salads to cool down your palate.
While unassuming, the restaurant offers a true Durban food experience. Those looking to fill a large void in their tummies, Billal’s offers open fire char braai with an Indian twist. If this is more your taste, you’ll probably want to get your hands on their Mixed Grill. Complete with ¼ chicken tikka, a seekh kebab, 4 malai cubes, 4 chicken cubes and a roti, it’s bound to keep for full for hours.
If you’re looking for an authentic slice of Durban culture with a side of delicious cuisine, Billal’s is most certainly the place for you!
